Perhaps the coolest, and now rarest, SSP Mustangs were the 1985 & 1986 models. The 1985 and 1986 had a different nose on the front than the 1983-1984 cars, and the 1985 and 1986 are rare in the fact that the 1985 had a carburetor fuel system, and the 1986 was the first year for fuel injection.

Looking over the various SSP Mustangs to come off of the Ford assembly line in 1985-1986, these are the SSP Central top five picks.

Pick #1 - Kentucky State Police

The Kentucky State Police 1985 SSP Mustang is at the top of the list for 1985. Their solid gray color, slick roof top, black wheels, carbureted 5.0 V8, and roll cage made this a muscle car with a badge! This car was equipped with blue strobes in the grill and rear window, and was setup with both VASCAR and RADAR to clock speeders. Kentucky only purchased (5) of these Mustangs, and they are very sought after. These cars are so desirable, that true SSP collectors, and KSP Mustang enthusiasts, have accounted for the location of every one of them, and patiently wait for them to come up for sale.

Pick #2 - California Highway Patrol

The California Highway Patrol SSP Mustang is a fantastic example of the classic American police pursuit vehicle. It doesn't matter where you go in the United States, people quickly identify the iconic black and white markings of the California Highway Patrol. These cars featured a red spotlight and alternating flashing headlights. They prowled the highways of California preying on unsuspecting speeders and kicked off the Ford Mustang SSP legacy.

Pick #3 - Nevada Highway Patrol

The Nevada Highway Patrol SSP Mustang is more beautiful than these photos can truly show. They featured a great color combination of blue and silver with yellow lettering. The wheels were painted the same color blue as the body. They had Aerodynic Model 22 (mini) light bars and dual chrome spotlights. The passenger side spotlight was equipped with a red bulb. They had a very unique chrome 'Buddy Bumper' on the front that is now nearly impossible to find. The NHP only purchased (3) of these Mustangs in 1985, and an unknown number in 1986. There is only (1) of these known to exist, but given the Nevada climate, there is a good chance that there are more of them out there. It could be the Holy Grail of all 1985-86 SSP Mustangs.

Pick #4 - Texas Department of Public Safety

The Texas Department of Public Safety SSP Mustang. Their black and white paint scheme quickly let you know that the law was present. Their black sides and white top (and black wheels) gave them an intimidating look. Although not a light bar car, these cars could quickly get your attention with the red and blue flashing halogen lights at the front bumper, in the rear window, and the red flashing dash light.

Pick #5 - Florida Highway Patrol

The Florida Highway Patrol SSP Mustang. When it comes to Mustang police cars with light bars, these FHP cars (with the push bumpers) were probably the coolest light bar equipped Mustang patrolling the highways in 1985/86. They were black and tan with black wheels, and featured a Federal Signal Jetsonic lightbar. The 1986 (above right) had Signal Stat style halogen lights on the push bumper. These push bumper cars were rare.
